In 1907 John Glover-Kind wrote the following lyrics to his popular music hall song: “Everyone delights to spend their summer's holiday down beside the side of the silvery sea. I'm no exception to the rule, in fact, if I'd my way, I'd reside by the side of the silvery sea.”
And us locals here in Southend-on-Sea are lucky enough to have it that way. At a time when summer holidays abroad this year are looking less likely by the day, we have the benefit of living in the perfect staycation location.
Just this week it has been announced that we’ve achieved another prestigious Blue Flag award. The scheme is one of the world’s most recognised symbols which are only awarded to beaches that qualify against rigorous environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria. It is a great achievement to have just one Blue Flag but in Southend we now have five!
You probably will have known about our seven miles of beaches, but did you also know that we have the Purple Flag award which is only granted to locations that have a diverse offer for an entertaining, safe and enjoyable night out?
On this basis, Southend has it all from award winning beaches by day to an award winning hospitality scene by night. But that’s not all we have. We have a stretch of seafront that is lined with arcades, an infamous free entry theme park, many places to eat and drink, shops galore and amazing places for visitors to stay – a perfect set up for a family looking to spend some time away from work.
When your friends and family are pondering what do for their holidays let them know what we have on offer here in sunny Southend.
“I do like to be beside the seaside! I do like to be beside the sea!” So let’s get summer truly started by spreading the word and taking pride in all that we have to offer in this town.
