Southend High Street is set to sparkle this festive season as Christmas in the City returns with a full day of markets, music, and magical family fun - all leading up to the spectacular Christmas Light Switch-On at 6pm.

Southend City BID is thrilled to announce that BBC Essex will bring their trademark energy and festive spirit as hosts of this year’s Christmas Lights Switch On event, taking place on Saturday 15th November in Southend city centre.

BBC Essex will be promoting Christmas in the City live on air in the lead up to the day, including interviews with key figures such as Suzanne Gloyne, Southend City BID Manager, and Nick Parr from Trafalgar Theatres, headline sponsors of this year’s Christmas events.

On Switch-On Day, BBC Essex’s Sadie Nine will be broadcasting live from Southend High Street, capturing the excitement as visitors explore the festive markets and enjoy performances throughout the afternoon.

The main stage will then be hosted by BBC Essex presenters:

- Paul Lovett & Genieve Mullen (1 – 4pm)

- Sonia Watson & Rob Jelly (4 – 6pm)

Just before the grand switch-on, the Rock Choir will lead the crowd in a community sing-along, filling the High Street with festive voices as the city counts down to the moment Southend’s lights illuminate the night sky.

Festive Highlights

  • Festive Artisan Market: stretching the length of the High Street and through The Victoria Centre, featuring local makers, charities, and community groups.

  • Live Performances: local choirs, schools, and performers- including The Show Choir, Faces Theatre Arts, and musicians Heidi & Ruby Robinson  will bring festive cheer to multiple stages and busking spots.

  • The Big Switch-On: lights officially switched on by The Worshipful Mayor Cllr Nigel Folkard, joined by cast members from Trafalgar Theatres’ Christmas productions Cinderella and The Snow Queen.

  • Extra Festive Magic: the ever-popular Storytelling Bus returns to Royal Square, alongside a brand-new Christmas tree and children’s rides throughout the season.

Festive Sundays 2025

Suzanne Gloyne, Southend City BID Manager, said:

“We’re delighted to be welcoming BBC Essex as our hosts this year. Their involvement will not only bring the day to life on stage but also help us share the excitement with listeners across Essex in the run-up to the event. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate our city’s creativity, community, and Christmas spirit.”
